Practice Help

I get a lot of feedback from parents about how their kids won’t practice.  Sometimes I feel like I get a lot of excuses from tired parents who don’t really have the time or inclination to sit for 15 minutes to half an hour a day with their kids in front of the drum kit or piano.  The thing is though; consistent practicing is a conduit towards self-discipline that goes way beyond music.  You’re not just getting them to learn theory but you’re giving them tools and skills that will last a lifetime.

These tools and skills have vastly positive upshots (drum pun) for personal nirvana.  The hiccup is that self-motivated discipline isn't really first nature for most kids, so it's up to the parents to fashion affirmative, likeable and fun ways to practice as a path towards self-motivation.

Having a goal for each practice session is essential, whether your child is practicing for five minutes or a couple of hours each day. Set goals, hold yourself as well as your kid responsible to them and create a practice journal that you both can look back over and be proud of.   Maybe you want to use gold stars on a calendar or a reward system for meeting their weekly goals… it’s up to you.

How Parents Can Help

There is all kinds of ways to help your child practice.   The lesson is not the practice time it's every day in between lessons that the practice takes place and it's really important if you want your child to get the full grasp of what they're learning.
bigger hurdle seems to be the theory part of the lesson.
